THE PORTRAIT

The work will wait while you show the child the rainbow, but the rainbow won't wait while you do the work.

Five-year-old Mark watched with interest as his father sketched the portrait of one of his clients. The woman sat very still on the couch while Mark’s father worked swiftly with his pencil to outline her face on the paper in front of him.

But there’s something that Mark couldn’t understand. His father’s sketch did not look like the woman he saw sitting in the couch. Mark only saw lines, crosses, and circles on the clean white paper. It didn’t make any sense to the young boy. Innocently, he asked,

“Dad, how is it that what you’re drawing is not what I see?”

His father smiled and continued working on his pencil. Tired of waiting for an answer, Mark fell asleep beside his father. Hours later, Mark woke up. On the drawing board was his father’s completed picture of a woman. Mark exclaimed excitedly;

“Amazing!”
